Boston Salary Guide 2026: Biotech, Education, and an East Coast Cost Structure

Boston pays well in biotech, finance, and education — but Massachusetts taxes and Cambridge rents make the math tighter than the salary headlines suggest.

Boston's Hidden Tax

Boston salaries are well above national average — but Massachusetts levies a 5.0% flat income tax (raised to 9.0% on income above $1M as of 2024), and Cambridge / Boston-proper rents are among the highest in the US. The picture isn't bad. It's just less dramatic than the salary headlines.

Median Salaries

Boston–Cambridge–Newton MSA (2026):

  • All occupations: $78,940
  • Software engineer: $148,000
  • Biotech research scientist: $135,000
  • Senior biotech / pharma lead: $190,000
  • Financial analyst: $112,000
  • Registered nurse: $108,000
  • Teacher (Boston Public): $89,500
  • University professor (tenure-track): $135,000
  • Hospital physician (specialist): $385,000
Boston's depth in biotech specifically is unmatched — Cambridge and Kendall Square form the densest concentration of biotech jobs in the world. Moderna, Vertex, Biogen, Genzyme, Pfizer's research arm, plus hundreds of smaller startups.

Taxes

For a $150,000 Boston salary:

  • Federal: ~$24,800
  • FICA: ~$11,475
  • Massachusetts state: ~$7,425 (flat 5.0%)
  • Boston city: $0
  • Take-home: ~$106,300/year
Massachusetts also passed a "millionaires' tax" surcharge of 4.0% on income above $1M (so 9.0% total above that threshold). Most workers won't hit it; senior biotech executives and finance partners will.

Rent

Boston 1BR rent in 2026:

  • Back Bay, Beacon Hill, South End: $3,200–$4,200
  • Cambridge (Harvard / Kendall Square): $2,800–$3,800
  • Allston, Brighton, Brookline: $2,200–$2,800
  • South Boston, Dorchester: $2,000–$2,600
  • Somerville, Medford: $2,200–$2,800
  • Quincy, Malden (commute zone): $1,700–$2,200
Median home price in Boston proper: $750K. Cambridge: $1.1M. Suburbs (Newton, Brookline): $1.3M+.

Top Sectors

Biotech. Cambridge Kendall Square is the global epicenter. Research scientist comp $120K–$170K; PhD-level senior scientist $180K–$260K; biotech executive comp regularly $500K+ with equity.

Higher education. Harvard, MIT, BU, Northeastern, BC, Tufts. Tenure-track professor $130K–$190K; tenured full professor at top schools $250K+; deans and senior administrators $400K+.

Hospitals. Mass General, Brigham, Beth Israel, Boston Children's. Among the highest-paid specialty physician markets in the country — cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery routinely clear $500K.

Finance. Fidelity, State Street, Wellington Management. Senior portfolio manager $300K–$1M+.

Tech. HubSpot, Wayfair, Akamai, plus regional offices for FAANG. Smaller than Cambridge biotech but real.

What You'd Need to Live Comfortably

  • Single, Allston / Brighton / Somerville: $95K base.
  • Single, Back Bay or Cambridge 1BR: $145K base.
  • Couple, no kids: $175K combined.
  • Family of 4, top suburb (Newton, Lexington, Wellesley): $325K+ combined.

The Winter Catch

Boston winter is the New England version: not as deep as Minnesota, but real snow, regular days in the 20s°F, and notorious icy sidewalks. Heating bills $150–$300/month November through March. Vermont weekends help.

When Boston Wins

Boston is the right financial choice if you're in biotech, higher education, hospital medicine, or finance at senior level — these are the sectors where the salary premium genuinely outpaces the cost premium. For software or non-medical professions, the math is competitive but not obviously better than several lower-cost alternatives (Raleigh, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis for tech; Nashville or Atlanta for finance).
