Boston Salary Guide 2026: Biotech, Education, and an East Coast Cost Structure
Boston pays well in biotech, finance, and education — but Massachusetts taxes and Cambridge rents make the math tighter than the salary headlines suggest.
Boston's Hidden Tax
Boston salaries are well above national average — but Massachusetts levies a 5.0% flat income tax (raised to 9.0% on income above $1M as of 2024), and Cambridge / Boston-proper rents are among the highest in the US. The picture isn't bad. It's just less dramatic than the salary headlines.

What You'd Need to Live Comfortably

- Single, Back Bay or Cambridge 1BR: $145K base.
- Couple, no kids: $175K combined.
- Family of 4, top suburb (Newton, Lexington, Wellesley): $325K+ combined.
The Winter Catch
Boston winter is the New England version: not as deep as Minnesota, but real snow, regular days in the 20s°F, and notorious icy sidewalks. Heating bills $150–$300/month November through March. Vermont weekends help.
When Boston Wins
Boston is the right financial choice if you're in biotech, higher education, hospital medicine, or finance at senior level — these are the sectors where the salary premium genuinely outpaces the cost premium. For software or non-medical professions, the math is competitive but not obviously better than several lower-cost alternatives (Raleigh, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis for tech; Nashville or Atlanta for finance).
