Denver Salary Guide 2026: Mountain Time Tech Boom
Denver has become a real tech hub in the last decade, with no state income tax... wait, actually it does. Here's the realistic picture of pay and cost.
Denver in 2026
Denver's been one of the fastest-growing US metros for a decade — population, jobs, and rent all up substantially since 2015. The pitch is real: 300 days of sun, mountains 45 minutes away, a tech scene that's no longer punching as small as it used to, and salaries that have caught up to most second-tier metros.
The pitch has caveats. Colorado's 4.4% flat state income tax does eat into Texas-equivalent offers. And Denver-area housing has run hot — median home price is now over $620K.
Median Salaries
Denver–Aurora–Lakewood MSA medians (2026):
- All occupations: $69,420
- Software engineer: $138,000
- Senior software engineer (cloud, infrastructure): $185,000–$220,000 base
- Cloud architect (AWS, GCP corridor): $172,000
- Cybersecurity analyst: $128,000
- Registered nurse: $87,500
- Teacher (Denver Public): $73,000
- Petroleum engineer: $148,000
- Marketing manager: $112,000
Taxes
For a $140,000 Denver salary:
- Federal: ~$22,300
- FICA: ~$10,700
- Colorado state: ~$5,720 (flat 4.4%)
- Denver city: $0
- Take-home: ~$101,300/year
Rent and Housing
Denver 1BR rent in 2026:
- LoDo, RiNo, Highland: $2,000–$2,700
- Cap Hill, Wash Park, Cherry Creek: $1,800–$2,400
- Lakewood, Arvada, Aurora: $1,500–$1,900
- Boulder (commute zone): $2,300–$2,900
The rent isn't crazy by big-city standards, but it's risen ~70% since 2015 — faster than any other major US metro besides Phoenix and Boise.
Sector Concentration
Tech. Strong cloud, telecom, and outdoor-industry tech presence. Cloudflare, Splunk, Palantir, Oracle, plus the big-three cloud hyperscalers' regional offices.
Aerospace. Lockheed Martin, Sierra Nevada, Ball Aerospace. Senior engineers $130K–$180K, cleared roles 10–15% premium.
Energy. Major center for oil & gas (DJ Basin) and renewables. Petroleum engineers $140K–$200K.
Healthcare. UCHealth (Anschutz), Children's Hospital Colorado, large network of suburban systems.
Outdoor industry. Patagonia, REI, VF Corp (North Face, Vans), Burton — Denver is the head office for the US outdoor-gear sector. Pay is lower than tech but lifestyle compensation is real.
What You'd Need to Live Well
- Single, decent central neighborhood: $85K base.
- Single, LoDo / RiNo / Cherry Creek 1BR with parking: $115K base.
- Couple, no kids, central: $150K combined.
- Family of 4, good school district (Cherry Creek SD, BVSD): $220K+ combined.
The Altitude Tax
Denver is at 5,280 feet — most people from sea level need 2–4 weeks to fully acclimate. Drink water aggressively for the first month. The headache is real and goes away.
When Denver Wins
Denver is the right call if (a) the outdoor lifestyle is genuinely part of why you're choosing a city, and (b) you can find roles in tech, cloud, aerospace, or energy that pay above $130K. Below that pay band the cost-of-living math gets uncomfortable relative to less-trendy alternatives like Kansas City, Cincinnati, or Indianapolis.
